始建于战国时期秦昭襄王时代（前3０６─前２５１），为黄土夯筑。 是为了防御活动于西北草原地区的匈奴等游牧部族的侵扰而筑。此段长城后为秦始皇长城所用，是中国早期长城的重要遗址。
